The Local Area of Tarbert Loch Fyne

On the hill above the town lies Tarbert Castle, an ancient but ruined building. It is not far from the centre of the town and provides wonderful views across Loch Fyne to the Cowal Peninsula. The castle has been recently worked on to stabalise it for the future. There are signs with information about this fantastic historical site and a picnic area for you to enjoy the increadible views. 

This is a nice walk for visitors and locals alike. This is also the starting point of the Kintyre way, A mostly coastal walk from here all the way to the south of the Mull of Kintyre a total route of about 100 miles. There are also smaller walks many with great views both over Loch Fyne and on the west side over West Loch Tarbert to the islands beyond. 

On the other side of the town there are some good walks to the white shore in Barfad Farmlands. There is a ferry from the harbour to Portavadie on the Cowal Peninsula where many people go for a day trip either to tour by car or just to get off the ferry and enjoy the woodland and coastal walks which are there. A good lunch with great views can be had at the Portavadie Marina. 

A few miles south are the great ruins of Skipness Castle with views across to the Isle of Arran. A ferry to Arran is available in the summer season from Claonaig near Skipness. The castle is free to visit and you can even go out onto the battlements. There are many walks nearby and the area is generally very quiet In short though, Tarbert is the Gateway to the Mull of Kintyre Peninsula and the southern islands. There are many castles, walks and beaches to visit as well as quiet roads to drive and view the spectacular scenery. For those who really enjoy the outdoors there is mountain biking, angling, surfing, sailing, and much much more all within easy distance of this wonderful wee town.
