Visit The Islands
Tarbert is the ideal base to visit the islands of Islay, Jura, Gigha and Arran. They all make great day trips for the visitor to Tarbert to experience the islands without necessarily having the expense of taking their cars on the ferries.
The ferries for Islay and Jura leave from Kennacraig (you can leave your car here) a few miles out of Tarbert (see our map page). If going as a foot passenger we would recommend going to Port Ellen where it is picturesque and has bars and restaurants as well as distilleries nearby to visit. If you are going to Jura you should take the Islay ferry to Port Askaig and then a short ferry trip to Jura. A bike would be recommeded to enjoy a short stay on Jura.
For Arran on a day trip, drive south from Tarbert and take the road to Claonaig (see our map) just after the Kennacraig Ferry Terminal. The Claonaig to Lochranza on Arran ferry (summer only) is a short journey and so cars a relatively cheap to take. However you can leave the car at the free car park at Claonaig and go on foot or (recommeded) take a bike.
The ferry for Gigha leaves from Tayinloan (see our map) (about 30 minutes south of Tarbert). A bike is the perfect choice for getting around this small and incredibly beautiful island.
